Spring fishing has been dynamite!

Here we are in the first week of June, and our May provided fantastic fishing!  Lots of big walleyes caught…many in the protected slot so released to grow and reproduce in this amazing fishery.  Several keepers, both over and under the slot, have provided food for a fish fry.  They are also catching lots of nice pike and some jumbo perch.  All of the fish seem fat and healthy.  Gunnar took Susie out this week, and they caught close to 30 fish!  The water has warmed up quickly, and it seems that the bite is starting to turn to lindy

Road Construction Alert

Highway 46 will be closed for construction through June between Deer River and Gosh Dam Place for those coming from the east.  The detour isn’t long.  From Deer River, instead of heading up Hwy 46, you will continue west on Hwy 2 to Ball Club.  Turn right on County Road 39 and go all the way to the T (Hwy 46, just south of Gosh Dam Place).  Turn left on Hwy 46 and drive just past mile marker 19.  Turn left on Eagle Nest Road, and we are 2 miles down on the left.  This detour will be well marked

Awesome Fishing Opener!!

Awesome Fishing Opener!!

We had an awesome 2018 fishing opener weekend at Eagle Nest Lodge!  After the threat of late ice keeping fishermen off the lake (it went out last week), we scrambled to get docks in and cabins ready and made it!!  The fishing was excellent and the weather was spectacular.  Everyone caught lots of fish…many in the slot, but they had a blast playing with them.  Most caught enough keeper walleyes and pike and perch to have a big fish fry.  The beautiful forecast continues this week, which will warm the lake up and turn the fish on even more.  This

Ice report…danger

My last post talked about good ice on Cutfoot Sioux and Winnie.  In light of several tragedies in northern Minnesota, I am stepping back from that.  Ice depths are extremely varied and dangerous.  And with 6″ of snow on top and more on the way, I ask you to be VERY careful on the ice.  Definitely no one should be driving vehicles on lakes, and even ATVs have been going through the ice lately.  Every time out, please drill lots of holes to check the ice thickness.  And understand that if it is 12″ thick in 1 spot, it doesn’t

Winter Conditions Update

We finally had some cold weather and now have 8-10″ of good ice on Cutfoot Sioux.  A couple inches of snow is on top of the ice, so getting around is still pretty easy with 4 wheelers and snowmobiles.  The gap between Cutfoot and Winnie has been open for a couple weeks, and finally froze over last night…so no travel on the ice between the lakes!!!  This is usually an iffy spot, but will definitely be bad for a while.  It’s snowing now and it looks beautiful outside.

Ice conditions 11/30/17

Susie and I went skating on the beautiful, clear ice on Tuesday.  There is no snow on top, so we had a great skate over to the summer homes and back, even though it was really windy.  We have about 4″ of good ice in front of the resort.  McAvity Bay has around 7″.  The warm weather this week didn’t make any ice, but we didn’t lose it, either!  We have a cold forecast for next week, and should make ice then.  We saw this sunfish encased in the ice just below the surface when we were out skating.  We

Summer Lovin’

We are busy with our first week of summer and first week of our recreation and naturalist program!  The kids have already played beach volleyball and capture the flag, Ruth Ann had the adults building a darling driftwood sailboat, T-shirts were colored, and we had our first blackout champion in Bingo!  This afternoon’s waterslide will be a hit…as always!  Oh, and the fishing has been very good.  The wind has kept our fishermen off Winnie quite a bit lately, but Cutfoot Sioux has been producing nice walleyes, northerns, perch and crappies.  And when they can get out to Winnie, the closer

We have ice!

Cutfoot Sioux froze over completely on Saturday, December 10th.  We have had below zero nights every night since then…yesterday didn’t ever get above zero.  So the lake is making ice!  4-5″ thick in most spots today, with just a little snow on top for traction.  Even though it’s a late start, things are shaping up quickly!

Fall is in the air and in the trees!

Mid-September is when the leaves typically start turning colors.  And in the next couple weeks, it will be spectacular around here.  The nights are cool and crisp and the days are mild.  Oh, and the fishing really kicks back in as the water cools down.  The best time of year at ENL!

Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.

After a fairly eventful July, with windy and stormy weather blowing through, we have settled into a beautiful week and it looks like more great weather and vacation time is coming.  Also, the fishing started picking up once the weather stabilized.  Our guests are catching a bunch of nice northerns and crappies.  The walleye bite is improving, too.  And the beach has been the best place to be to beat the heat.

The Ice Is Nearly Off The Lakes!

The Ice Is Nearly Off The Lakes!

I was so excited to share the news that the ice is nearly gone from Lake Winnie & Cutfoot Sioux. But then yesterday it began snowing, and today we have 3 inches of the fluffy white stuff on the ground. At this point in the year, I’m less than enthusiastic about seeing snow, but I know it won’t last longer than a couple days. Soon we’ll be begin the annual migration of all our docks from the shore and storage areas back into the lake. Of course this means that Minnesota’s Fishing Opener is just around the corner – May

Winter has finally arrived at Eagle Nest Lodge

Winter has finally arrived at Eagle Nest Lodge

Finally, after a very mild fall and early winter, the snow and the temps are falling.  The lake has just frozen over in the past couple weeks, which is very late for us up north.  But the forecast looks good for making ice.  We have 4″ of snow on the ground and are hoping for more soon!  The ski and snowmobile trails will be looking good soon.  Cabins 7, 11 and 16 are warm and cozy in the winter.  Come up and enjoy our winter wonderland…ice fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and have a roaring fire in the fireplace.
