The ice is out!!
We are so pleased to report that the ice is completely off the lake. It took a while - but spring has finally sprung ... the shovels and sleds are officially put away and we are celebrating by putting the docks in!!!
The winner of our "Ice Out" contest is the Roose's from Allison, IA with a guess of May 3rd.
Walleye Stripping
The DNR started the annual spring walleye stripping on Little Cutfoot Sioux Lake on Friday, May 2, 2008. (As seen in the pictures to the right.) Their goal was to collect 1139 quarts of eggs and be finished by Tuesday, May 6th. Early in the process they were averaging about 300 quarts a day. 10% of all eggs stripped from Liitle Cutfoot are put back into Winnie each year. The water temperatures were from 41-44 degrees F when they started. The ice was off Little Cutfoot when they began the process.
The DNR has closed part of Big Cutfoot Sioux and all of Little Cutfoot Sioux for the walleye opener, May 10th, to protect the walleyes after the spring migration and stripping. You may boat through, but cannot have a line in the water from Williams Narrows in Big Cutfoot and going east to Little Cutfoot.
Trivia question: What %of all the walleye fry & fingerlings stocked in Minnesota lakes comes from the Little Cutfoot Sioux walleye stripping station?
